Beyonce Serenades Michelle Obama, Cements Comeback In Atlantic City

Queen B ascends her throne during the second in a four-night run of Memorial Day weekend shows.
By Rebecca Thomas

<P><b>ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey</b> &#8212; The "year of 4" continues.</P><P>Four months after giving birth to her first child &#8212; an arrival announced last August <a href="/news/articles/1669858/beyonce-vma-performance.jhtml">at the MTV VMAs</a> &#8212; <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a> returned to the stage Saturday night, on the second of a four-night run in this East Coast resort city. And it was a spectacular fitting her rising icon status.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Beyonce Gets Back To Business, Kicks Off Summer!" id="vid:785342" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>So what kinds of clues get 20somethings calling you "the greatest performer" of your generation? Well, it's in the details. For one, Revel, the sparkling, 6.3-million-square-foot beachfront destination that played host to <a href="/news/articles/1685877/beyonce-memorial-day-atlantic-city-concert.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;'s comeback</a>, devoted a channel on its guest-room flat-screen TVs solely to B-related content: no weather broadcasts, nary a "Housewife" and no commercial breaks; just videos, all-star performances and more, all through Memorial Day weekend. It was evident in the distance traveled, too, with fans telling MTV News they'd made cross-country pilgrimages, while still others came from as far as Tokyo and South Africa to hail Queen B.</P><P>But those are just the hints, peripheral proof. The presence of First Lady Michelle Obama at last night's concert left little doubt that the little girl from Houston, who joined a girl group and then struck out on her own, had seen another benchmark in her relatively young career. After <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/04/13/michelle-obama-thanks-beyonce-for-letter">exchanging letters</a> in recent months, with each calling the other a role model for girls, Obama turned up in a sleeveless green sheath waving like royalty from a balcony in Ovation Hall.</P><P>A little after 10 p.m., as the pounding opening march from "End of Time" kicked in, Beyonc&#233; appeared in silhouette; the sequins were hard to make out but the wind-blown mane was <i>impossible</i> to miss. Finally, B, stunning in hot pink Stuart Weitzman heels and a beaded body suit, appeared on the massive stage backed by her dancers.</P><P>"Atlantic City, snap your fingers," she commanded, launching into "Love on Top." Without missing a step of the New Edition-inspired choreography, B powered through the song's modulations in an extended vocal showcase. Then she took an exaggerated pause, as if to catch her breath (or to bask in the adulation?), before belting out a final coda. The 30-year-old's comeback was officially under way.</P><P>Pushing through hits from her debut solo effort, including "Naughty Boy" and the dancehall-infused "Baby Boy," and <i>Sasha Fierce</i> smashes like "Diva," B defied all post-partum laws as she kept pace with Frank Gatson's acrobatic dance style. ("Y'all don't know how hard I had to work. I had to lose 60 pounds!" she laughed to the crowd later. "They had me eating lettuce.") And just as songs like "Single Ladies" and "Run the World (Girls)" are meant to serve as empowerment manuals for women, it became clear last night that Beyonc&#233;'s choreography is meant to do the same: a series of sensual quickstep moves that revolve around the hips and legs. It showed in the Fosse-style swing and formations on songs like "Get Me Bodied," and the strut-heavy footwork on "Freakum Dress."</P><P>"Sasha Fierce disappeared, but y'all bringing her back," B joked midway through the euphoric two-hour set.</P><P>For one of our favorite numbers, "Party," the <i>4</i> singer donned full-on showgirl regalia in a heady rendition that saw confetti coming from the roof and dice-shaped beach balls being tossed through the crowd as dancers in large feathered headdresses magically turned up in the aisles.</P><P>There were ballads, of course, at Ovation Hall, the more memorable among them a tribute to Whitney Houston and a cover of Lauryn Hill's classic "Ex Factor." And if Beyonc&#233; reminded us of what we've lost in those gut-wrenching covers &#8212; she proved, too, that she's more than ready to carry the weight on her shoulders.</P><P><i>Share your reviews of Beyonc&#233;'s Revel shows in the comments!</i></p>

Swedish House Mafia And Usher Bring Ibiza To Atlanta

'We'd rather work with someone we respect than just a big name,' Angello tells MTV News of SHM's two Looking 4 Myself tracks.
By Akshay Bhansali

<P>With the release of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a>'s seventh studio album, <a href="/news/articles/1686990/usher-looking-4-myself-evolution.jhtml"><i>Looking 4 Myself,</i></a> the veteran R&B star reveals a personal evolution that fittingly corresponds with today's pop-music appetite. In addition to the sumptuous soul one expects from Mr. Raymond, perfectly exhibited on songs like "Lessons for the Lover" and "Dive," it's evident that Ursh has a serious love of dance music. And after his euphoric collaboration on <a href="/news/articles/1670301/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">"Without You"</a> with EDM crossover star David Guetta, dance-music fans should be elated to find that in his three-year journey of discovery for <i>Looking,</i> Ursh worked with some of the biggest names in EDM.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Swedish House Mafia Produce 'Numb &amp; Euphoria' For Usher" id="vid:791038" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Before the album's release, fans were treated to the first single with producer Diplo, underscoring his versatility yet again in the <a href="/news/articles/1682000/climax-usher-diplo.jhtml">soft-synthy "Climax."</a></P><P>Of course, the revelation that Mr. Raymond would be putting out a double dose of Swedish House Mafia productions, "Numb" and album closer "Euphoria," was big news, too. Alesso appears in the production credits with <a href="/news/articles/1660513/swedish-house-mafia-masquerade-hotel.jhtml">Axwell</a>, <a href="/news/articles/1681804/miami-music-week-size-records-steve-angello.jhtml">Steve Angello</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1678633/swedish-house-mafia-sebastian-ingrosso-alesso.jhtml">Sebastian Ingrosso</a> on "Numb," which has a lighter, simpler beat than one typically expects from the Swedes. This is certainly in contrast to the whopping banger "Euphoria," which won't need too much retooling before being added to a SHM set.</P><P>MTV News caught up with Angello this weekend at Las Vegas dance-music mecca XS Nightclub, where he revealed just how these two gems came to be.</P><P>"We did the [2010 American Music Awards performance] with Usher," Angello said. "And then he came to hang out with us in Ibiza. [After that] we were in Atlanta and we were all working together for five days. And then we brainstormed and wrote the records from start to finish."</P><P>As Swedish House Mafia fans are well aware, the holy trinity of house are extremely selective about whom they work with. But the chance to work with a time-tested R&B legend they respect was an opportunity they relished.</P><P>"He's always been a great artist," Angello continued. "He always knows what he wants. Good collaboration, all in all. For us, we'd rather work with someone that we respect than to just work with a big name. It was the same with Pharrell [Williams, on <a href="/news/articles/1643772/pharrell-williams-calls-swedish-house-mafia-necessary-rock-stars.jhtml">SHM's "One (Your Name)"</a>] and Tinie Tempah [on <a href="/news/articles/1647200/axwell-hes-hyped-play-new-yorks-electric-zoo-fest.jhtml">"Miami 2 Ibiza"</a>]."</P><P>While Angello reminded us that "Numb" and "Euphoria" are Usher records, not Swedish House Mafia joints, they ought to hold you SHM fans over until Ax, Seb and Steve deliver their upcoming Australia-inspired <a href="/news/articles/1682265/swedish-house-mafia-single-australia.jhtml">"Emotional" single</a>, which is almost complete.</p>

Britney Spears, Demi Lovato Praised By Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger

'I'm always for the underdog coming back,' Abdul says of new 'X Factor' judge Spears.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Former "X Factor" judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger have remained pretty tight-lipped regarding the news that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lovato__demi/artist.jhtml">Demi Lovato</a> <a href="/news/articles/1685066/britney-spears-demi-lovato-x-factor.jhtml">will replace them</a> on the next season of the Fox show. Until now, that is.</P><P>This week, Abdul sat down with Wendy Williams on her talk show and had only the kindest things to say about both of those ladies.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears Explains Why She Wanted To Be A Part Of 'X Factor'" id="vid:769620" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"I think it's going to be great, and I'll tell you why. I think people are anticipating seeing Britney Spears. She's overcome a tremendous amount of adversity. And I'm always for the underdog coming back.</P><P>"She's a big star," Abdul said in footage posted on <a href="http://perezhilton.com/2012-05-24-wendy-williams-500th-show-paula-abdul-x-factor-drama-simon-cowell#.T75eV9xfFM4" target="_blank">Perezhilton.com</a>.</P><P>"And then there's a new budding star, Demi, with her music," she continued. "Her songs are great. She's riding a wave that's really exciting. It's a younger demo."</P><P>Scherzinger is also sending positive vibes Spears' way. She toured with her back in 2009 and added a bit of advice for the pop star. "Britney is so bubbly and warm and everyone loves her anyway, so she just has to be herself," Scherzinger told <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/marc_malkin/britney_spears_new_x_factor_judging_gig/308323#ixzz1vntHzHMj" target="_blank">E! News</a>. "I think that it's something that we can't deny, but there's something about Britney that we ... are always rooting for her and behind her, no matter what."</P><P>According to Britney fansite <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/2012/05/official-x-factor-austin-texas-auditions-post/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed" target="_blank">Breatheheavy.com</a>, Spears and Lovato will sit at the judges' table for the first time on Thursday (May 24) in Austin for auditions. Spears is expected to work an eight-hour day. She will also be in Austin on Friday for more auditions.</P><P>Cowell confirmed at the Fox upfront earlier this month that this week would mark the beginning of filming with the <a href="/news/articles/1685206/britney-spears-x-factor-concept.jhtml">new judges</a>.</p>

Usher Premieres 'Fuerza Bruta'-Inspired 'Scream' Video

Ush's new clip mixes footage from his recent off-Broadway stint with some seriously sultry dance moves.
By James Montgomery

<P>Last month in New York, Usher put in work on the set of off-Broadway show <a href="/news/articles/1685172/usher-fuerza-bruta-rehearsal.jhtml">"Fuerza Bruta,"</a> starring as the show's Running Man and giving fans an impromptu sneak peek at his (then upcoming) <a href="/news/articles/1684389/usher-looking-4-myself-cover-neck-tattoo.jhtml"><i>Looking 4 Myself</i></a> album.</P><P>But now, with the album in stores and its second proper single, "Scream," at radio, it looks like Ush was using that experience for something else: namely, the inspiration for <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnjqNHB1bKw" target="_blank">the "Scream" video, which premiered Tuesday</a>.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Exclusive First Look At Usher's 'Fuerza Bruta' Performance" id="vid:769347.id:1685137" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>The clip is basically one long "Fuerza" performance, only this time, Usher isn't limited to the confines of the stage. Dressed in a natty suit, and backed by beams of light, he makes like his titular character in the production, running through a black expanse that seemingly stretches on forever (of course, he does make use of periodic pit stops to break into dance &#8212; it <i>is</i> an Usher video, after all). He's joined at the end by a female dancer, and the two share some seriously sultry moves.</P><P>Mixed in with the video is footage taken from his actual "Fuerza Bruta" performance &#8212; a female cast member floats above him, suspended in a bubble, water splashing around her. And much like the show itself &#8212; which is performed on a 360-degree stage, giving fans unprecedented views of the action &#8212; that live footage gives the "Scream" video a kinetic jolt to match the track's pounding, club-ready production.</P><P>Part live clip, part swaggering, oversexed performance video, Usher's "Scream" showcases the man doing what he does best: belting out a pulse-quickening, come-hither track while dancing like nobody else in the business. And hey, if this whole R&B megastar thing doesn't work out, perhaps Ush could make a name for himself on Broadway. As he proves with his new video, he's certainly got the moves.</p>

How Andrew Garfield Changed 'Spider-Man'

The British actor was instrumental in providing Peter Parker with a skateboard and some much-needed wit in the 'Amazing' reboot.
By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Andrew Garfield in "Amazing Spider-Man"
Photo:

Among his many powers, Spider-Man has one "Amazing" gift that perhaps you don't already know about: He is a skilled skateboarder.

Andrew Garfield, the British actor filling out Peter Parker's shoes in director Marc Webb's "Amazing Spider-Man," brought many ideas to the superhero reboot's table, including his character's proficiency with a skateboard. Speaking with MTV News, Garfield said that "a lot changed" over the course of shooting "Spider-Man," including his very own idea to have Spidey wield a board at numerous points throughout the movie.

"It was my idea that this iteration of Peter would skateboard, maybe because I skateboarded when I was a kid, and it's something personal to me," the actor said at the "Amazing Spider-Man" press junket. "It linked in so nicely with being able to activate the powers in a new way."

Garfield teamed up with director Spike Jonze's Girl and Chocolate Skateboards and persuaded the powers that be to include scenes of Peter messing around with skateboards, adding some levity to an otherwise "heavy" script.

"What's always been important about Spider-Man to me is the lightness, the humor and the enjoyment of a teenage kid getting these powers. In reality, what would happen?" he said. "We pitched the idea to [the Spider-Man producers] and they shot it. I thought that was awesome."

Another scene that changed due to Garfield's input: the infamous carjacking sequence that sees Peter in full Spidey regalia for the first time, webbing up and taunting a criminal with lots of laughs and very little restraint.

"That was important to me, in terms of the humor, the wit, finding the power of anonymity," he said. "That was a fun night, because it was all improvised and free. There was nothing scripted about that. That was awesome."

Overall, Garfield found the entirety of "Spider-Man" to be "a forever evolving process," thanks in large to Webb's place at the head of the film.

"It was all changing," said the actor. "Marc set up an environment where we could play, and that was really, really nice."

Check out everything we've got on "The Amazing Spider-Man."

'People Like Us' Is The Anti-Blockbuster, Chris Pine Says

'You can have 'The Avengers' and you can also have films like ours, which are smaller,' he tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

If you've been following along with Chris Pine's movie career, the last few films in which he's appeared ("Star Trek," "This Means War," "Unstoppable") might lead you to believe that the man is only action/adventure-oriented. Not so, as demonstrated by his work in his latest film, "People Like Us," which revolves around a man who is tasked with delivering a $150,000 inheritance to a sister (Elizabeth Banks) he has never met.

MTV News recently sat down with Pine to discuss the unique tone and subject matter addressed in the film, which is based on the real-life experiences of its writing team, Alex Kurtzman (who also served as its director), Bob Orci and Jody Lambert, and is not necessarily the type of movie that big studios are gunning to green-light.

"Everyone I've talked to at the studio level who makes these decisions, it seems like it's become an even more bottom-line kind of industry, so movies like 'Paranormal Activity' or something that's made for $3 million and goes on to gross $200 million or the big tentpoles that have the big marketing machines behind it, those are the movies they have to make," Pine said about studios feeling pressured to churn out surefire blockbusters. "It's a real tribute to DreamWorks and to Steven Spielberg. First of all, Alex wrote a great script and as much as the business of show business can sometimes dominate at the end of the day, people in what we do, we love good stories, we are hungry for good stories," he explained of the selling point of "People Like Us." "I think if something like 'The Artist,' a silent film in black-and-white with French actors can do well. I think it's a great sign that in our times you can have both; you can have 'The Avengers' and you can also have films like ours, which are smaller."

Pine said what he hopes people will enjoy in watching "People Like Us" is the fact that it features realistic characters trying to solve realistic problems, in addition to its old-school dramedy vibe influenced by James L. Brooks and Cameron Crowe.

"Alex talks very much about his influences — Brooks, Cameron Crowe, obviously — we always talked about 'Ordinary People' and 'Kramer vs. Kramer.' What's great about those films, there's nothing hooking you other than hopefully a story about a family that you relate to because it looks very much like your own, so it doesn't necessarily mean these people have to go a great many places," he said. " 'Kramer vs. Kramer' is a great example. You get lost in the minutia of this world of a kid making waffles or was it pancakes? We'll have to look that up. That's the world Alex wanted to create. That was the joy, figuring out the everyday living of these characters."

Ke$ha Calls Bob Dylan Cover 'An Emotional Purging'

Pop singer sings 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' for Amnesty International anniversary album.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>It's hard to associate <a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> with songs about anything other than hot guys, body glitter and partying. But she's defying her usual topics of interest for human rights organization Amnesty International. The singer is one of the many musicians on the org's <i>Chimes of Freedom</i> compilation of Bob Dylan's music, out January 24.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Ke$ha Calls Bob Dylan Cover Choice 'An Accident'" id="vid:720838" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>When MTV News spoke with K-Dollar Sign last week about her <a href="/news/articles/1676172/kesha-sleazy-remix.jhtml">all-star remix of "Sleazy,"</a> she also opened up about switching gears vocally and emotionally for her version of Dylan's classic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."</P><P>"I mean, I think it's pretty well known that he's one of, if not my most, favorite artists of all time and ... one of the most amazing lyricists as well &#8212; the original storyteller," she explained. "So I love Bob Dylan and this was just, like, a dream. When they asked me to do a cover, I was just, like, salivating and going through all my records. It was so fun. It was the best homework assignment you could possibly have."</P><P>K's version of Dylan's song is a slow-burning, heartbreaking ode to the already heartbreaking classic, where she channels Dylan through lyrics like "Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say/ To try and make me change my mind and stay/ We never did too much talkin' anyway/ So don't think twice, it's all right."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="What Is The Biggest Perk Of Being A Headliner?" id="vid:642810" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Ke$ha had originally intended to record another Dylan track, but when she heard that someone else had their sights set on it, she settled on "Don't Think Twice," prompting a catharsis she could never have imagined.</P><P>"This song was kind of an accident. "I just sat down on my bed for the first time after months of being on tour and I just started crying, and it was kind of like an emotional purging, and you can hear it on the record."</P><P>In addition to Ke$ha and her contribution, the album will feature 75 other Dylan classics recorded by nearly 80 artists including Adele, Miley Cyrus, "Glee" star Darren Criss, My Chemical Romance, Evan Rachel Wood and Sugarland. Britney Spears To Get New 'Glee' Tribute Episode

Fox comedy will also move to Thursday, like 'X Factor,' where Brit has signed on to judge.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>After drawing <a href="/news/articles/1648982/britney-spears-glee-episode-draws-record-setting-ratings.jhtml">record ratings the first time around, "Glee"</a> has announced plans to pay homage to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> ... one more time. The news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Spears will join the "X Factor" as judge, when the competition show returns to Fox this fall on Thursday nights. (Glee also moves to Thursdays for season four.)</P><P>While Brit appeared in the September 2010 tribute episode, which used her impressive collection of hits, the 2012 tribute episode will instead focus on her "Glee" namesake, Brittany S. Pierce (played by Heather Morris), without any appearances from Spears. <a href="http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/05/15/glee-scoop-second-britney-tribute-exclusive" target="_blank">EW.com</a> reports that the new episode will be the second in the show's fourth season, returning in the fall.</P><P>The Spears-centric episode will feature eight of her songs, and a source revealed that Fox is excited to have Spears joining the network on "X Factor" and that the "Glee" ep is partly a reflection of that.</P><P>Spears was on hand Monday at the Fox Upfront presentation in New York City, where she appeared alongside fellow <a href="/news/articles/1685057/demi-lovato-britney-spears-x-factor.jhtml">"X Factor" newbie Demi Lovato</a>, as well as returning judges L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell. At the event, the judges and host of "So You Think You Can Dance" weighed in on the <a href="/news/articles/1685066/britney-spears-demi-lovato-x-factor.jhtml">ladies joining the show</a>.</P><P>"I don't have any advice for those ladies," "SYTYCD" host Cat Deeley told MTV News. "What I do like about it though is they will be able to absolutely impart some serious wisdom. I love the idea that they've been in the business for so long and since being kids, and so quite often they've had successes and they've had failures on things.</P><P>"And I think the most important thing is the mistakes we make," she added. "You learn so much from mistakes that you make and I think they'll be able to impart their wisdom to the new kids coming through. I think it's a great booking."</P><P><i>Are you excited for another Britney tribute episode on "Glee"? Tell us what songs you want to hear in the comments section!</i></p>

'Magic Mike' Stars Avoided 'Iconic' Stripper Outfits

'When I actually danced, I did a Boy Scout outfit, and I thought it was the lamest thing ever,' Channing Tatum tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Channing Tatum in "Magic Mike"
Photo:

If you're not yet familiar with the year's sexiest movie about male strippers, "Magic Mike," then you've been deliberately avoiding the very fun subject. The R-rated film is loosely based on star Channing Tatum's stripper past, directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh, and features a very attractive ensemble cast. When MTV News caught up with Tatum and co-star Matthew McConaughey recently, we asked them to reveal which parts of their characters' stripper attire proved most cumbersome during filming.

"You were always in comfy, comfy stuff," McConaughey pointed out about Tatum's wardrobe.

"Yeah, but that was sort of my own thing when I actually did it, because when I actually danced, I did a Boy Scout outfit, and I thought it was the lamest thing ever," Tatum recalled. "And I did a clown thing. But my favorite thing I did [was a dance to an] Usher [song], and I was just like, 'No I'm going to pick the song that I like. I'm going to dress like the song should be dressed for,' and that was it. I wanted to be normal; I didn't want to do the kinda iconic stripper things."

"It's a great wardrobe, isn't it?" McConaughey continued, speaking of the cast's various glittery outfits, thongs and tight booty shorts. "I loved getting the wardrobe together."

"The tassels were my favorite," Tatum said of a specific detail on one of McConaughey's thongs.

"The tassels, yes a lot of talk, but a lot of work, a lot of hours went into the tassels on Dallas' thong," he recalled with a smile. "The length of the tassel, the thickness of the tassel, what does it reveal, what does it not."

"It had to be perfect," Tatum said.

All this happy talk about their tiny outfits prompted us to ask whether they kept any of the creative costumes.

"I kept all of my stuff," McConaughey said without missing a beat.

"All of it," Tatum agreed. "Come on, we've got wives now."

Check out everything we've got on "Magic Mike."

Maroon 5 'Born Again' With Pop-Heavy Overexposed

'It's sort of like, 'Screw you ... deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye,' ' Adam Levine says of the album's pop leanings.
By James Montgomery

Maroon 5's James Valentine and Adam Levine
Photo:

The first thing you'll probably notice about Maroon 5's Overexposed album is the lengthy list of collaborators attached to it: a Murderer's Row of pop hitmakers like Ryan Tedder, Shellback and Benny Blanco, with Max Martin helming it all as executive producer.

The second thing you'll probably notice is that it's called Overexposed. Because, reinvigorated by the worldwide success of their hit "Moves Like Jagger" — which marked the first time the band had written with outside sources (in this case Blanco and Shellback) — M5 make no bones about the fact that, this time out, they're aiming to become the most popular, inescapable and, yes, overexposed band on the planet.

"The title is kind of pre-emptively saying, 'Hey, we're overexposed. Deal with it,' " frontman Adam Levine told MTV News during the premiere of M5's new "One More Night" video. "Bands like to do this thing where they're like, 'Oh, man, we just didn't know. Oh my God, it's so crazy, we just wrote this song,' and that's true, but we like that. We want to have that experience, we want to have hits, we want to have songs that, internationally, people are going to know.

"It's exciting when you go to a country you've never been to, when you go to Jakarta, and they're singing the lyrics to 'Payphone,' it's so cool," he continued. "And that's something that we not only love, but we pursue, unabashedly. Our sense of purpose was very dialed in. ... We knew what we wanted, we knew in our minds how to achieve it on an album ... and I think we found it."

And, in a lot of ways, it's fitting that Overexposed (in stores now) comes exactly 10 years after the release of Maroon 5's debut disc, Songs About Jane. Because ever since that album, they've been hearing complaints from fans who want them to return to their roots. The difference now is that they no longer listen to those complaints. Backed by the biggest names in the pop business, Maroon 5 are going for greatness these days, and like it or not, they're not going to change course anytime soon.

"Songs About Jane was alienating a certain amount of our fanbase back then, and if we're not alienating a small percentage of our fanbase every time we make a record, we're doing something wrong," Levine said. "And usually, I find that people who complain about wanting that original sound would be the same people where, if you had a record that sounded like the first one, they would say, 'Why don't you guys branch out and change a little bit?' So it's sort of like, 'Screw you ... deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye!'

"When you've been in a band for a decade, even longer, you start thinking, 'OK, well maybe now we should explore this or change things up,' because you don't want to have it sound formulaic or too much like what you've always done," he continued. "So we're totally cool with kind of being born again. ... At the heart of it, it still sounds like us, but we embrace this side of our band, and now that we've fully captured it on this record, we're going to see what happens, and I think it's going to be really positive."

"But I've been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] <i>Euphoria Morning,</i> my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I'd done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren't necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rage_against_the_machine/artist.jhtml">Rage Against the Machine</a>Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.</P><P>"It feels like I've done this so many times that when it's presented to me as being a departure, I feel that's a misconception," he added. "I feel like that's my theme at this point."</p>
